We undertake loft conversions across Battersea. Our service is suitable for all types of property including homes in conservation areas.
Battersea was once a marshy embankment along the Thames with quiet meadows further out with only a tiny central village with a handful of inhabitants. Pottery fragments from c.800-1000 have been recovered from beam slots marking the foundations of a timber-framed building some 8m long along with the remains of wattle-and-daub walling which would have belonged to the earliest inhabitants of Battersea. Deposits of alluvium along the south bank of the Thames provided fertile soils for market gardening, although there is speculation that there was also a small fishing port here. In the early days the banks of the Thames were also harvested for reeds which were used for thatch roofing.
Over the years the idyllic peace of this village which was mainly involved in market gardening; growing carrots, melons, lavender and asparagus turned into the hustle bustle of a growing London suburb. Manufacturing industries in the locality also developed, in particular brickmaking using clay from Latchmere Common. In 1763 villas appeared in the southern part of Battersea as residences for city merchants, the first time the village had been opened as an early commuter area for outsiders. The population of Battersea increased from around 2,000 in 1690 to 5,540 by 1831, before the influx from suburbanisation boosted it to 168,905 in 1901, by which time it was a Metropolitan Borough.

Industries such as mills, breweries and dying, bleaching and calico printing sprang up along the Thames during the industrial revolution from 1750s onwards. A number of large firms grew such as the Morgan Crucible Company and Price's Candles. Battersea Power Station was being completed in 1939 and the area became quite industrial with all of the issues associated with pollution and poor housing that go with it.
This all resulted in a huge demand on housing both for the wealthy and the poor and a number of estates grew, in particular the Shaftesbury Park Estate with over 1200 new houses, as well as the large residential builds around the park and Battersea Square. Today much of Battersea is subject to conservation which restricts the degree to how developers can approach things like loft conversions. That's where Lifestyle Interiors enter.
