House Extensions Battersea

Extending your home is an ideal way to gain more space without having to move. We specialise in extending homes across the Battersea area.

There was a time in London, in this case Battersea, when there was a need for housing which was met in a grand fashion by philanthropists. A good example is The Shaftesbury Park Estate, which today is a Conservation area. In 1867 William Austin built several thousand small Victorian homes on 40 acres of land dedicated to providing decent accommodation for the working classes at a time when overcrowding and squalid living conditions were rife amongst the poor. One important point to note is that there was no provision for pubs on this development which was a deliberate policy to avoid the social problems of cheap alcohol. The estate was built between 1873 and 1877 and comprised about 1,200 two storey houses with gardens laid out in wide tree-lined streets. Its interesting to note that whilst they were designed for the poor, they are now some of the best places to live in London. Well worth holding on to. Today the average price in SW11 is £700k (Jun 2011).

With every inch of meadow now accounted for and built on, home owners have little choice other than to move or extend. Bearing in mind the intrinsic value of these properties from a heritage perspective, as well as the implications of the conservation controls, care must be taken in any type of building work. This is where Lifestyle Interiors comes in. .

The Shaftesbury Park Estate conservation is just one example of fine architecture and restricted development in Battersea, there's the Battersea Park and Battersea Square Conservation Areas too. Here at Lifestyle Interiors we appreciate the character of not only these areas, but the whole of the Battersea area, and we want to help home owners develop in harmony with their environment.

Lifestyle Interiors can undertake any type of extension to meet your requirements whether its simply to add a few extra feet for a new kitchen or a double storey extension to add new rooms and that desperately needed new living space.

Types Of House Extension

We can undertake a range of house extension types including traditional cavity brick and block walls, timber tressle roofs with tiles, timber intermediate floors and timber or concrete ground floors. For the Battersea area you would typically be looking at using reclaimed London Stock or similar bricks for the exterior wall as well as making considerations for the types of windows, doors and trims used as well as adding relevant stone/brick detail to keep it in line with the surrounding architecture.

Another option is to use steel frame walls, a light gauge steelwork which is similar in concept to a timber frame method but a little more stable.

Whatever approach you take Lifestyle Interiors can help you achieve the look and feel you want both inside and out at a price that's good.

Lifestyle Interiors is well known for it’s building work in the Battersea area. We think laterally for successful build results, listen to clients and lead our construction team accordingly to deliver successful building work with maximum performance and impact. With the rising cost of moving it's popular these days to look for innovative ways to increase the space you already have. If you live in a Victorian or Edwardian property a side extension offers a perfect solution. Alternatively you can extend towards the garden with bi-fold doors to let the light and nature in to your new spacious living area.

Extended Kitchens

Lifestyle Interiors are experts at extending kitchens. This is a perfect synergy of our broad building expertise with our years of experience installing designer kitchens such as Nolte and Hacker lines.

Typically we take the house out a suitable distance, add bifold doors and glass panel roofing to maximise the natural lighting and install an open plan island style kitchen. This approach often involves knocking through the kitchen and living room to create one large family focused living area.

Getting Started

Thinking of extending your home? The first thing you need to do is get some good ideas. Try sketching out some plans. Be as flamboyant and adventurous as you want. Look through magazines and interior showrooms for themes and ideas for the style. Try to consider the full scope of potential, do you want a lot of natural light? What's the room going to e used for? What sort of appliances/fittings do you want? How many rooms are you adding?

Some ideas for extension function include: Once you have an idea of what you are looking for the next step is to approach either us or an architect to begin realising the concepts and visualisations into detailed technical drawings. This will also allow you to determine what is and what isn't possible. Maybe scratch the fold down swimming pool? Perhaps the 5 storey wizards/princesses tower was a tad extravagant?

Prices

Prices are always hard to guess at, but generally speaking if you think £1000 per m2 you might get there sooner than you think. This includes utilities etc.

Planning Permission etc

One of the greatest challenges is getting planning permission. This is where Lifestyle Interiors can really help out. Whilst not all extensions will actually require planning permission, if you Live in the Battersea area the they probably will.

Going Forward

If you are ready to move forward with your new house extension why not call now to find out exactly how Lifestyle Interiors can help. We are always happy to talk informally about potential customers requirements, and even happier to meet them for coffee at our London show room.
