Clapham has come a long way since 1332 when it was no more than a medieval village with only 18 registered tax payers. During the 17th century transport links developed between London and Clapham with a regular stage coach service which attracted well off city dwellers looking for a rural retreat and many grand private residences were built by wealthy city merchants. Of course little mention is generally made of the fact that many refugees arrived in Clapham from the Great Plague of London in 1665 and also the fire of 1666 resulting in Clapham being quite a large village by the end of the century.
